Chargers Bounce Back, Defeat Wilkes

Less than 24 hours after the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team opened its season with a loss to Albright, the Chargers rebounded and defeated Wilkes, 62-44 in the consolation game of the Neumann University Tip-Off Tournament in Aston, Pa. Seniors Aubrey Folger and Katy Stover combined for 44 points as the Chargers improved to 1-1 on the young season.

How it Happened: Like they did a night earlier, the Chargers opened the game on a big scoring run as Lancaster Bible jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first 1:44. Unlike the night before, the Chargers did not allow their opponent right back into the game as Lancaster Bible kept the offensive pressure up and scored 16 of the final 21 points of the first quarter to take a 26-12 lead after one quarter of play. Folger and Stover had 22 of the 26 points in the first quarter for the Chargers as the duo hit from inside, outside and at the free throw line.

Neither team scored in the first 2:57 of the second quarter and the Explorers managed just four points the entire quarter. Lancaster Bible opened up a 22-point lead just prior to the half as junior Krissy Pennell connected on a layup with 45 seconds to play. Lancaster Bible forced 13-first half turnovers and had five steals.

The third quarter belonged to Folger has she scored 10 of Lancaster Bible's 12 points and the Chargers maintained their 20-point advantage for almost the entire quarter. The Chargers opened their biggest lead of the contest midway through the fourth quarter as Stover drained a 3-pointer with 4:30 to play to give Lancaster Bible a 60-35 lead. Wilkes trimmed the deficit to 16 with just over a minute left thanks to a few late baskets, but Stover scored her 19th and 20th points of the game on a layup with 32 seconds remaining to produce the final score of 62-44.

By the Numbers: Folger finished with 24 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the floor and a 2-of-3 effort from the free throw line...Through two games, Folger is averaging 22 points and for her efforts, she was named to the All-Tournament Team...Stover played all 40 minutes and finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists...Pennell played terrific in her second game in a Lancaster Bible uniform as she had 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds...Senior Shanice Smith had just two points, but chipped in with nine boards, two steals and two assists...Sophomore Molly Arnold grabbed three rebounds, while fellow sophomore Alyssa Bowen had a rebound, assist and steal.

The Coach Says: "We came out strong today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We set the pace of the game from the start and controlled play throughout the rest of the game. I am very proud of this team and how they responded after our game last night. It's nice to get a win under our belts and we will keep on improving."

Information Hodge Podge: This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools...The victory is the first in Vanderhoff's head coaching career...Lancaster Bible shot 25-of-62 (40.3 percent) from the floor...Wilkes turned the ball over 27 times and shot 18-of-58 (31 percent) from the floor.
