Women’s Basketball Falls, 71-48, to No. 5 NYU

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz dropped a 71-48 decision to No. 5 ranked New York University on Tuesday evening in the Hawk Center.
 
The Hawks drop to 4-2 and host State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. NYU rises to 6-0 and pays a visit to Emmanuel College on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
 
The Violets shot 45.5 percent from the line (30-of-66) and turned 23 New Paltz turnovers into 27 points but both teams drew even on the stat sheet with 38 rebounds apiece.
 
Sophomore guard Jasmine Bryant (Elmont, N.Y./St. Mary's College Prep) and junior guard Morgan Roessler(Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) paced the team with eight points each while junior guard/forward Kit Small(Slingersland, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) and junior forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) both added seven points. Sophomore Laura Stuart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team.
 
Junior guard Kaitlyn Read led the Violets with a team-high 24 points and four steals. Senior guard/forward Maya Wasowicz added 15 points to the cause while senior guard Riley Wurtz notched a team-high eight rebounds.
 
NYU jumped out ahead early to secure a commanding 10-point lead in the first quarter. New Paltz managed to trim the deficit to six as Small and Roessler put up points on the board but the Violets once again held a 10-point advantage at the half (35-25).
 
The Violets continued to control the ball throughout the rest of the game, extending their lead by more than 20 to seal the final 71-48 triumph.
