BANGOR, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team (1-4, 0-1) was topped by North Atlantic Conference rival Husson University (1-1, 1-0) with a 62-54 loss in the conference opener on Tuesday night.
Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) had a stellar night with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double-double. Smith also dished three assists and recorded a steal. Kennadi Grover (Cushing, Maine/Oceanside) scored in double figures with 13 points and was nearly perfect at the free throw line by shooting 5-of-6. Grover tallied five rebounds and charted an assist, steal, and a block.
Husson had three starters score in double figures with Victoria McIntyre leading the way with a team-high 18 points. Kenzie Worcester and Chandler Guerette followed with 15 points apiece. Worcester shot 7-of-10 from the field and led the Eagles with three steals.
After a close first quarter, the Eagles took a commanding 22-point lead into the locker room. The Beavers came out of intermission with determined to get back into the game and outscored the Eagles, 21-9, in the third quarter and narrowed the margin to only ten points heading into the final period. Smith made a layup to start the fourth quarter but Husson went on a small run to push the game out of reach for UMF and take the conference meeting.
UMaine-Farmington enters a four-game road trip with a visit to conference foe Castleton on Friday night.
