ITHACA, N.Y. - Ithaca outscored Cortland 21-8 in the third quarter to break open a tight game and the host Bombers defeated the Red Dragons, 62-48, in a non-league women's basketball game.
Ali Ricchiuti and Erin Ferguson led Ithaca (3-2) with 15 points apiece. Ricchiuti also grabbed 13 rebounds. Allison Spaschak came off the bench to score nine points on three 3-pointers and Jordan Beers added seven points and a game-high six assists.
Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) paced Cortland (2-2) with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Cortland led 13-9 after a Rice 3-pointer with 1:42 left in the first quarter, but Ricchiuti and Annie Giannone hit treys to give the Bombers a 15-13 lead at the first break. The game continued to be close in the second quarter, with Cortland holding a 23-21 lead at the 2:37 mark on a Rice layup. Erin Woop's layup tied the game with 2:10 left and Spaschak nailed a 3-pointer with 1:04 left to give Ithaca a 26-23 halftime lead.
The Bombers started to pull away with a 12-3 run over the first four and a half minutes of the third quarter. Ferguson netted six points and Keri Steele four during that stretch. Ithaca's lead grew to 17 at 45-28 on a RIcchiuti 3-pointer with 2:20 left and was 47-31 at the third-quarter stoppage.
The lead grew to 20 behind two Spaschak treys in the first 1:09 of the fourth. Cortland was eventually able to cut its deficit to 11 at 58-47 on a Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) layup with 2:54 remaining, but Ithaca scored four of the game's final five points to secure the win.
Cortland shot 35 percent from the floor overall and only 2-of-19 (11 percent) from the 3-point line. Ithaca hit 42 percent of its shots, 29 percent (8-of-28) from three.
Cortland starts SUNYAC play on the road this weekend. The Red Dragons face Buffalo State Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Fredonia Saturday at 2 p.m.
