Milton, Mass. - Senior captain center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) totaled game-highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 62-46 victory over the Curry College Colonels in the finals of the Curry Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon. Trinity is off to its first 2-0 start since 2009-10, having blasted Wellesley, 52-30, in its first-round game yesterday, while the Colonels drop to 2-3.
Trinity held the Colonels to 27.8 percent field-goal shooting and outrebounded them, 46-33, to offset its own 22 turnovers and 55 percent free-throw shooting. First-year guard Erica Junquet (Monroe, N.J.) gave Trinity a 5-4 lead two minutes into the game and the Bantams led the rest of the way. Back-to-back treys by senior captain guard Alexa Menard (Wallingford, Conn.) put Trinity ahead, 18-9, late in the first quarter, and a jumper by freshman forward Erin Cunningham (Wilton, Conn.) gave Trinity its first double-digit lead of the game with eight minutes remaining before the break. Curry scored the next six points to pull within 21-17 on a layup by Shannon Griffith, but Trinity closed the second quarter with a 13-6 run and a basket inside by sophomore forward Emily Llerena (New Milford, Conn.) with two seconds on the clock made the score, 36-25, in the Bantams' favor at halftime.
Trinity never led by less than eight points in the second half and had its largest margin at 54-35 with 6:29 remaining in the contest on a free throw by Junquet. Griffin finished 7-for-13 from the floor and also contributed a pair of steals, finishing as the lone Bantams in double digits in scoring. Senior forward Melanie Mills (Woodstock, Conn.) notched eight points, nine boards, and a blocked shot for Trinity. Emily Irwin recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals, while Griffith finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, and four blocked shots for the Colonels.
