The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team combined a high-pressure defense with a balanced offense Friday night to defeat Berea College (Ky.) 89-61 in a non-conference contest at the Main View Tipoff Tournament in Manchester, Ind.
The Warhawks (2-0), held Berea to 38.6% shooting from the field and forced 21 turnovers with their full-court pressure defensive attack.
UW-Whitewater outscored Berea (1-1) 23-7 in points off of turnovers, while also outscoring them in bench points 34-8.
Seven players scored between seven and 12 points for the Warhawks. Sophomore Brooke Trewyn(Whitewater/Whitewater) posted a season high 21 points and a team-best six assists, while senior Lisa Palmer (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) recorded 12 points on 6-14 shooting from the floor in 25 minutes.
Senior guards Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) and Jaya Perkins (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) both went 2-3 from downtown en route to eight points each. Perkins also added three rebound, two assists and three steals. Sophomore Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added ten points on 5-8 shooting from the floor in 12 minutes off the bench.
Following a tightly-contested first quarter, UW-Whitewater pulled away in the second by outscoring Berea 23-12 in the second period and never looked back.
The Warhawks continue non-conference play tomorrow afternoon in the second game of the Main View Tipoff Tournament where they take on Manchester University (Ind.) starting at 2 p.m. central time.
