SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 15, 2015) – A strong final two quarters helped the Sewanee women's basketball team defeat visiting Wesleyan 66-40, Sunday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (1-1) scored 18 points in the third quarter and a game-high 23 points in the fourth. That, along with a defense that forced 12 turnovers the final 20 minutes, helped Sewanee extend a 25-17 halftime lead to 26-point win.
Additionally, Sewanee shot the better the final 20 minutes. After making only 24.4 percent of their attempts in the first and second quarters, the Tigers made 58 percent to close the game.
Sewanee played a number of freshmen that showed signs of improvement as the game progressed. That included an extended stretch in the third quarter where no upperclassmen were on the floor.
Freshman guard Corey Caulder finished with her first-career double-double. Caulder had 18 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, and two assists.
Senior Jamie Chauvin finished with 12 points and five boards while freshman Rebecca Lobach scored 13 points, which included 11 in the second half, on 5-of-9 shooting.
Early in the contest, both teams got off to a slow start. Neither team made a field goal until almost four minutes off the clock. After Chauvin broke the scoreless tie with a jumper, Sewanee finished the first quarter on an 11-4 run.
The Tigers continued to build their lead in the second. Behind a strong 2-2-1 full-court press, the Tigers extended their lead to eight by the half. That setup Sewanee's strong second half.
Kyla Williamson led Wesleyan with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Myra Patrick also played well with four points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Sewanee will play its third game in four days, Tuesday, as the Tigers welcome regional-rival, Covenant to Juhan Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
