COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Ursinus College head women's basketball coach Jim Buckley has announced his retirement after serving as head coach for 13 seasons. He leaves Ursinus with the second most wins in school history at 151 and led the Bears to the 2007 Centennial Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
"For the past fifty-two years, I have followed my dream of working in the field of education," Buckley said. "Beginning at Germantown Academy and finishing at Ursinus College has allowed me to come into contact with some extraordinary individuals. I am indebted to those who served as role-models and mentors.
"Because of them, I have always felt compelled to follow their lead and do the same for others. My many memories will focus my former colleagues and student/athletes who have enriched my life. Thank you all!" Buckley added.
During his tenure, Buckley had 14 players named to the All-Centennial squad and led the Bears to double digit wins in nine of his 13 seasons. He also had seven players score 1,000 points in their careers.
"It's been an honor and pleasure to work alongside someone with so much passion for education; whether it be on the court with his team or in our coaches' hallway supporting his colleagues," Ursinus athletic director Laura Moliken said.
"I cannot thank Jim enough for all his wonderful contributions to Ursinus College. He is a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend to all. He will forever be a part of Team Ursinus. We wish him well in his retirement."
Buckley also had coaching stints at Bryn Mawr, and was an assistant coach at the University of the Sciences. He served as head coach at Germantown Academy, where he had an overall record of 250-89 while winning ten championships.
A national search is underway for his successor.
