Women’s Basketball Loses at Oneonta, 61-44

ONEONTA, NY – Senior Ashley Wallace (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) recorded her 16th career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, but Buffalo State (12-13, 9-9 SUNYAC) was held to its lowest point total of the year, falling to Oneonta (15-10, 10-8 SUNYAC) 61-44 in the final regular season game on Saturday afternoon.

Wallace led the way on offense, while Harriet Hernandez tied her career-high with nine points. Keyonte Edwards (Buffalo, NY/O'Hara) added seven points and Niasha Houpe (Rochester, NY/William Floyd) pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds.

Both teams opened up the game struggling to score. Oneonta got on the board first and held the lead until Hernandez hit a 3-pointer to put the Bengals up 11-9 at 11:54. Another three from Hernandez pushed Buffalo State's lead out to four points just over two minutes later. With 4:06 left to play in the half, the Bengals were up by two points, 20-18, but the Red Dragons went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead. Wallace hit a jumper in the last 20 seconds to cut Oneonta's lead to three, 25-22, heading into halftime.

Buffalo State opened up the second half quickly with a layup from Houpe, pulling to within one point of the Red Dragons. Oneonta responded with a three 3-pointers and a 15-5 run to take an 11 point lead at the 13-minute mark. The Red Dragons continued to hit from long range and managed to go up by 17 points with 3:02 left in the game. Strong free throw shooting in the final minutes helped the Red Dragons seal the 17-point win.

The Bengals struggled shooting, hitting just 23.9 percent from the floor, 20 percent from long range and 46.7 percent from the charity stripe. Oneonta finished the game with a 49-48 advantage in rebounding and recorded an impressive 16 blocks.  

Buffalo State enters SUNYAC playoffs as the No. 6 seed and will head to New Paltz for quarterfinals on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
