WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) posted game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team lost its 2014-15 road finale at Brandeis University, 77-68, on Monday afternoon at Red Auerbach Arena. The game, originally scheduled for yesterday, was postponed due to intense winter weather.
The Spartans fall to 7-15 overall and 1-10 in the University Athletic Association. The Judges improve to 13-9 (5-6 UAA) with their second win of the season against CWRU.
Orcutt's fourth career double-double led three double-digit scorers for the Spartans. Sophomore guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) scored 15 point, and junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 14.
Hannah Cain led Brandeis with 15 points. Heather Cain (13), Noel Hodges (10) and Ceara McNamara (10) all reached double-figures off of the bench.
Overall, Brandeis held a 41-11 advantage in bench scoring.
The Spartans held several leads early on and tied the score as late as the 7:28 mark of the first half when Mummey hit a layup to bring the score to 19-19. Several minutes later, Brandeis utilized a 7-0 run to move ahead by 10 (36-26) as Heather Cain scored a layup with 2:26 left before the break.
Down 38-30 at halftime, the Spartans scored four of the first six points in the second and pulled to within 40-36 with a McCoy jumper at 18:10. However, the Judges opened the game up with an 11-2 run which ended in a Paris Hodges three-point play which made the score 51-38 with 11:56 left to play. The home lead reached as many as 17 and did not slip below double-digits until the final two minutes.
The Spartans now return home for the final three games of the season beginning with a Friday, February 20 matchup against Emory University (Ga.). The game, set to tip off at 6:00 p.m., is part of CWRU's 10th Annual Throwback Weekend which returns to historic Adelbert Gymnasium.
