Sewanee comes back in the second half to down BSC, 78-73

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 15, 2015) – Behind three players in double figures, the Sewanee women's basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern, 78-73, Sunday, inside Bill Battle Coliseum.

Down by five, 33-28, at halftime, the Tigers outscored the Panthers 50-40 the final 20 minutes after making an incredible 62.1 percent of its shots in the second half.

Sewanee (12-10 overall, 3-9 SAA) was led on offense by Jamie Chauvin, who scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Freshman Hannah McCormack added 21 points while Savannah Rose pitched in 12 points and three steals.

The game was close throughout the first half with both teams making a number of scoring runs. With the score tied at 22-22, BSC closed the half on an 11-6 run.

The Panthers would hold the lead until 12:44 to play. Chauvin pushed Sewanee in front with a jumper. McCormack then followed with a three on the Tigers' next possession. After an old fashion three-point play by BSC, Sewanee kept its offense rolling.

The Tigers scored on each of their next four possessions. With 6:33 left, Sewanee extended its advantage when Kelley Myers nailed a three. McCormack and Kayla Sewell then extended the Tiger advantage with back-to-back jumpers.

Down the stretch BSC would pull to within three, 76-73, when Laura Van Peursem scored. However, by this point, Sewanee got the ball back with four seconds left. Chauvin then made two free throws to seal the win.

Overall, Sewanee made 48.2 percent of its attempts. That was the second highest shooting percentage for the Tigers this season. Sewanee did make 48.1 percent of its three-point shots, which was a season high.

Sewanee's defense limited BSC's starters to only 18 points. In fact, the Panthers were led by reserve Ashley Curry, who scored 12 points.
