GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball Team (14-8, 10-3 CSAC) defeated the Falcons of Cedar Crest College, 73-41, on Saturday afternoon to clinch a Colonial States Athletic Conference playoff berth.
Four players recorded double digits with freshman Dee Terry leading the way for GM in the scoring column with a game-high 19 points. Senior Natasha Matthews flirted with a double-double, adding 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior Olivia Bradford and sophomore Charlotte Kucowski chipped in 10 each, with Kucowski also recording a personal-best five steals. Kucowski grabbed a game-high 12 boards, good for her second double-double of the season.
A solid defensive effort by the Griffins in the first half gave them a 19-point cushion, leading, 37-18, going into the break. GM scored the game's first 12 points, holding the Falcons scoreless until their first field goal at the 12:08 mark. Cedar Crest tried to stay in the Gwynedd rearviewmirror, but a 7-0 scoring run to close the stanza opened the gap.
The Griffins kicked off the second, with a steal and a break-away layup by senior Kelsey Yori (Folsom, Pa. / Ridley) to keep the offensive momentum going. Yori filled out the stat sheet, finishing with eight points, seven assists and tied a career-high with five steals.
Kayleigh Keggan led the way for the Falcons (5-19, 4-12 CSAC) with nine points. Breonna Lewis and Taylor Osley were not far behind chipping in eight each.
Gwynedd Mercy shot 30-72 (41.7%) overall compared to the Falcons who were just 15-63 (23.8%). GM also won the battle on the boards, pulling in 51 compared to the Falcons' 45.
The Griffins return to action on Monday when they travel to Cabrini for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off. GM, who currently sits in third place, is still in the hunt for one of the two first-round playoff byes.
