Cortland Women Win Defensive Battle vs. Plattsburgh, 51-36

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Cortland held Plattsburgh to 22 percent shooting from the field as the Red Dragons defeated the Cardinals, 51-36, in a SUNYAC women's basketball game.

Cortland's win, coupled with New Paltz's loss at Geneseo, puts the Red Dragons two games ahead of the Hawks for second place in the SUNYAC standings. Geneseo leads the league with a 13-1 mark, followed by Cortland at 12-3 (18-4 overall) and New Paltz at 10-5. Cortland has clinched at least third place in the league standings with three regular-season games remaining.

Dumas was the lone double-figure scorer for either team. Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) finished with eight points and four rebounds and Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) scored seven points. Rae Frasier (Schenectady) added six points and eight boards and Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) led the Red Dragons with five assists.

Plattsburgh (9-12, 6-8 SUNYAC) is currently ahead of Oswego by a half game for the sixth and final SUNYAC playoff spot. The Cardinals travel to play the Lakers Saturday afternoon. Stephanie Linder led Plattsburgh with nine points, six assists and three steals. She made three 3-pointers. Allie Taylor and Jax Miller each scored eight points and Devona Paul recorded seven points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Plattsburgh shot only 17 percent in the first half (5-of-29), but trailed only 22-16 as Cortland shot 32 percent in the half and committed nine turnovers before the break.

Cortland turned a 24-19 lead into a 29-19 advantage with 14:50 left after a Dumas layup and a Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) 3-pointer and slowly pushed the lead to 14 at 38-24 with 9:13 remaining after a Sarah Seger (Wantagh/L.I. Lutheran) free throw. The Red Dragons' lead remained in the 11-15 point range the rest of the game.

Cortland shot 50 percent in the second half and finished at 40 percent. The teams combined for 39 turnovers, 20 by Cortland.

Cortland will host Potsdam Saturday at 4 p.m. in its final regular-season home game. The Red Dragons will honor their six seniors – Rando, Minor, Wolstenholme, Seger, Frasier and Brooke DeMarco (Grand Island) – at the same time as the men's senior day immediately following the men's game versus Potsdam. That game starts at 2 p.m.
