It was nearly three weeks ago that the UW-Superior women's basketball rallied from a big deficit to down UW-Stout on a last second shot at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. The Yellowjackets turned the trick again on Saturday against UW-LaCrosse, although this time the sizable deficit came a bit earlier in the action.
Trailing 22-4 after eight minutes of the opening frame, UW-Superior rallied from a nine point halftime deficit, outscored the Eagles by the 11 in the second half, and got two free throws from Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) in the last 10 seconds to pull out a dramatic 67-65 win.
The victory not only kept UW-Superior's undefeated home record intact, it upped the Yellowjackets overall mark to 16-6 while also improving the team's conference record to 10-3 for the campaign.
UW-LaCrosse (9-13, 4-9) jumped on the Yellowjackets early, scoring 22 of the first 26 points to take a 22-4 lead at the 11:23 mark of the first half after a layup by Jenna Anderson.
The Eagles maintained a double-digit advantage for the majority of the first half before a pair of three-pointers from Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) and two inside scores from Carmen Watson (Milwaukee, Wis./James Madison) helped UW-Superior trim the deficit to 32-23 at the intermission.
UW-Superior continued their rally in the second half, taking their first lead of the contest at 39-38 on two free throws by Watson with 14:53 remaining in regulation.
The Yellowjackets eventually went on to take a 51-43 lead on a jumper by Vanessa Lebens (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) with just over 11 minutes left in the contest. But the Eagles scored the next eight points to even matters 51-51 on a layup by Elise DeNoyer with 9:59 showing on the clock.
From there, the two teams traded slim leads before Lindberg connected on a three-point shot for a 65-65 draw with 1:27 remaining.
Neither team scored over the next 1:17, setting the stage for Linzmeier's two foul shots for a 67-65 Yellowjackets' lead before a last-second attempt by the Eagles fell short, allowing UW-Superior to come away with the victory.
Linzmeier finished with 16 points for the Yellowjackets while Lindberg had 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Watson meanwhile finished with 11 points for UW-Superior.
Anderson and DeNoyer each had 17 points for UW-LaCrosse while Rachel Atchison had 11 more for the Eagles.
The Yellowjackets will host conference leaders UW-Oshkosh at the Mertz next Saturday. Opening tip against the Titans is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game can be heard on tape delay on 91.3 starting at 7 p.m. Matt Johnson will have the call.
