Farmingdale State - 67, Mount Saint Mary - 59
Farmingdale, N.Y. - Senior guard Nicole Lanteri (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and junior guard Andrea Desvignes (Deer Park, N.Y.) scored 21 points and 18 points, respectively, to lead the Farmingdale State women's basketball team to a 67-59 victory over Mount Saint Mary College tonight. With the win, the Rams improved to 12-8 overall, 7-0 in conference play, while the Knights fell to 8-10 overall, 3-3 in the Skyline.
In the first half, Farmingdale State jumped out to a quick eight point lead, 10-2, with Desvignes scoring six of the first 10 points. The Rams held the advantage throughout the half and led 27-21 at the break, as Desvignes totaled a team-leading 12 points in the first.
In the second, Lanteri made a jumper just 32 seconds in before sinking a three-pointer 30 seconds later to give Farmingdale State an 11-point lead, 32-21, just a minute into the half. The Knights' senior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) scored seven of her teams next 12 points to cut the deficit to 38-33 with 13 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Rams pushed the lead back up to 55-43, before a 13-4 run by Mount Saint Mary cut the deficit to three, 59-56, with 1:27 left. Junior forward Marlaina Sherman (Miller Place, N.Y.) ended the Knights' run with a jumper at 1:02 to make it 61-56. Six successful free throws over the final minute by Lanteri would seal the victory for Farmingdale State.
Lanteri finished with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and was perfect (8-for-8) from the charity stripe. Desvignes added three assists and three rebounds, along with her 18 points. Sherman totaled 10 rebounds, eight points and three blocks, while junior forward Nailah Cherry (Roosevelt, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
For Mount Saint Mary, Candarelli tallied a team-high 18 points, nine rebounds. Junior guard Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) finished with 15 points, on five shots from long range.
Farmingdale State will now make a return trip to the Mount this Saturday, February 7th for a game at 1:00 p.m.
