RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- Alverno College got off to a slow start in Tuesday night's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest at Dominican University, but used a strong second half to claim a 72-59 victory that snapped a four-game skid.
The start of the game was delayed nearly an hour due to snowfall in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas that hampered the Inferno's travel to Igini Sports Forum, and the extra time on the bus contributed to the early deficit the Inferno faced.
Trailing by as many as nine, Alverno (5-15, 3-12 NACC) closed the gap to a single point, 35-34, at the halftime break after back-to-back baskets by Nyakok Duop closed out the opeing period.
After a Tessa Mersberger 3-pointer tied the game at 39 with 18:10 to play, Duop scored on the next Inferno possession to give the Inferno the lead, one the visitors would retain the remainder of play.
An Alyssa Mane layup gave the Inferno its largest lead of the game, 59-43, with just under 10 minutes to go, but the host Stars (1-20, 0-16) would cut that in half over the next 7:30, after a pair of free throws with 2:19 remaining made it 67-59.
Those would be the final points Dominican would put on the board, as the Inferno would hold the host team scoreless the remainder of the contest for the 13-point road win.
Julie Gallegos led Alverno with 17 points, Mersberger added 16 and five assists, while Duop scored 12 and snagged seven rebounds.
Dominican's Sidney Montano had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds.
Alverno returns home to host Benedictine University on Thursday in Reiman Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
