BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College wiped out a 16-point halftime deficit to take the lead with 3:37 left in the game, but the Eagles went scoreless in the final 2:54 of the game as Emory & Henry emerged with a 66-63 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at Nininger Hall.
The Eagles shot just 31 percent and turned the ball over 15 times in the first half as the visiting Wasps went to the break with a 40-24 advantage.
Bridgewater opened the second half with a quick 8-0 spurt to cut the deficit in half. Heather Cantrell scored on a 12-footer and Oshene Kelly added a layup, making the score 40-28. Layups by Jessi Strom and Jessica Lam capped the spurt and pulled the Eagles to with eight, 40-32.
Bridgewater continued to chip away at the margin and another layup by Lam made it a five-point game, 44-39, with 13:39 left in the game.
Emory & Henry used a 5-0 spurt to push the margin back to double figures, 57-47, just past the midway point of the second half.
A 3-pointer by Megan Jacoby gave E&H a nine-point lead, 60-51 with 7:58 remaining, but a 10-0 flurry pushed the Eagles into the lead. Kelly hit two foul shots and Strom knocked down a 3-pointer, cutting the margin to 60-56. Kelly scored after grabbing an offensive rebound and Lam added 1-of-2 at the line, slicing the Wasps advantage to 60-59 with five minutes left to play. Kelly added a layup with 3:37 remaining for a 61-60 Bridgewater lead.
Jacoby scored on a driving layup to put the Wasps back on top, but Lam hit a pair of foul shots to put the Eagles on top by one, 63-62 with 2:54 remaining.
Karina Farr moved inside to put the Wasps ahead with 2:01 left and neither team scored until Kristie Langley hit an open layup with 20 seconds remaining, giving the Wasps a 66-63 lead.
The Eagles had one chance to tie, but Strom missed a 3-pointer from the corner and Chloe Harris chased down the rebound for the Wasps, clinching the 3-point victory.
Lam paced three Eagles in double digits with 18 points. Kelly posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Strom finished with 12 points. Anna Green scored 17 points to lead the Wasps. Jacoby and Farr each added 14 points.
The Eagles held a slim 48-45 edge on the boards. The Wasps made just 34.2 percent of their field goal attempts, but took 22 more shots than the Eagles.
