Cook Makes Something Special In Boxers' 88-52 Win

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A near triple-double from Olivia Cook paced Pacific in an 88-52 home victory on Saturday evening against the visiting Pacific Lutheran Lutes.
 
Cook (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) opened the scoring for Pacific with a jumper that sparked a 9-0 Boxers run to open the evening. Pacific Lutheran's first points came with 15:57 on the clock as Bailey Raines hit a jumper to set the Lutes off on their own 11-point run to take an 11-9 lead at the 11:40 mark.
 
With a jumper at 11:22, Cook put a cork in the Lutes' run and tied the game at 11-11. Cook added an assist to her stat line on the next possession when she set-up a Nani Ostrom 3-pointer to give Pacific a three-point advantage over the Lutes.
 
Lacey Nicholson and Raines scored on back-to-back possessions for the Lutes to regain the lead for Pacific Lutheran at 15-14.
 
Pacific scored six-straight over a three-minute period to take a five-point lead, but neither team was ready to let the other slip away as the two sides reached the 6:09 mark of the first half tied 23-23.
 
Madison Green-Hayward's two made free throws, which tied the game at 23-23, were answered quickly by a Sarah Curl (So., Portland, Ore.) jumper and a Cook layup. Pacific Lutheran's Jori Hall hit a jumper with just over five minutes remaining in the opening half to pull the Lutes within a pair.
 
The final five minutes of the first half saw Pacific outscore Pacific Lutheran 11-2 to head into the halftime break with a 41-27 lead over the Lutes.
 
Cook finished the opening half a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and headed to the locker room with a double-double in the first half at 11 points and 11 rebounds. Cook recorded four assists in the opening half.
 
The second period opened with Cook assisting on a 3-pointer from Kaila Johnson (Sr., McKinleyville, Calif.) before scoring her first points of the period with 18:47 on the clock to give Pacific a 46-27 lead.
 
After surrendering a layup to Hall, Pacific lead reached 20 off a jumper from Kelsey Misseldine (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and a free throw make from Johnson.
 
Megan Abdo and Nicholson looked to keep Pacific Lutheran in the game with a combined four points in less than a minute, but it was Cook again at 14:47 with a layup to put the Boxers ahead 54-33.
 
Cook's layup set Pacific off on an 11-0 run over a five-minute stretch that saw five different Boxers score. Kaelyn Voss stopped the bleeding for the Lutes with back-to-back 3-pointers. A Nicholson layup followed Voss' makes and cut the score to a 63-41 Pacific advantage.
 
Cook scored four straight from the free throw line to get Pacific back in the scoring mood, before assisting on three-straight Pacific makes, including a 3-pointer from Ostrom.
 
Pacific's run reached 17 points before Jordan Bengen hit from the free throw line to pull the Lutes within 37 of the Boxers.
 
Kelsey Viani-Wittwer (Fr., Hawthorne, Nev.) scored seven points off the bench for the Boxers in the final 2:23 as Pacific saw time expire and wrapped up an 88-52 home victory.
 
As a team Pacific outrebounded Pacific Lutheran 40-25 and outdid the Lutes 21-7 in the assist column. Pacific finished the evening with 14 steals, and a shooting percentage of 53.4.
 
Cook led Pacific with 23 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists, while shooting 9-10 from the field.
 
In the scoring column, Ostrom finished with 18 points, while Curl and Johnson tallied 10 points each. Misseldine tallied nine points in her first start of the season.
 
Johnson led the Boxers on the defensive end with four steals, while on the boards Curl grabbed seven. Ostrom finished the day 6-8 from beyond the 3-point arc in Pacific's victory.
 
Pacific wraps up its four-game homestand on Feb. 6 as Puget Sound travels to the Stoller Center.
