Mariners Use Strong Second Half to Edge Badgers

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy Women's Basketball defeated Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon, 58-49.

The Mariners trailed 7-0 until Mary Badeen (Newport, Maine) closed the gap to 7-6 with a pair of three-pointers to open up the scoring for the hosts. Maine Maritime came close but never held the lead in the first twenty minutes, entering the halftime down, 21-20.

Maine Maritime came out hot in the second half, scoring 12-unanswered points to build a 32-21 lead, the Mariners shot 48.1 percent in the second half to stifle the Badgers, taking their second-straight North Atlantic Conference win.

Following a career-performance last night, Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) ended the afternoon with 16 points, including 12 in the second half, six rebounds, three assists and a block. Conference-leading scorer Badeen picked up a double-double with 16 points of her own, and 13 rebounds. Maggie McConkey Fryeburg, Maine), Jillian Perron (Skowhegan, Maine) andMackenzie Vosburgh (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) each added eight points for the Mariners.

Brittany Robertson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Badgers, while Kasey DeGreenia added 11 points off the bench and Ashley Goddard pulled down a team-leading 11 boards.

With the pair of victories during Alumni Weekend the Mariners improve to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the NAC, while the Badgers fall to 5-10 and 5-5. 

The Mariners will hit the road next Friday and Saturday to take on Green Mountain and Castleton for a pair of NAC games.
