Bison Women's Basketball Upended by Saint Vincent

Jan. 24 – LATROBE, Pa. – Despite receiving 24 points from freshman Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier), the Bethany College women's basketball program dropped a 90-72 decision to Saint Vincent College on Saturday afternoon.

The two teams traded baskets over the first three minutes of the game as the Bison answered every made shot by the Bearcats with one of their own. Daugherty scored four points in the early stages, and a layup by Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) with 17:11 to play had the contest knotted at 8-8.

From there, however, the Bearcats would push the advantage out to double figures, outscoring the Bison 17-7 over the next seven minutes, pushing the lead to 25-15 with 10:16 left in the opening frame. Even though the Bison shot 48 percent from the field in the opening half, the Green & White still found themselves down to the Bearcats, 49-32 at the halftime break.

The second half was played much closer as neither team could put a significant run together. The Bison scored 40 points in the second frame while shooting 56 percent from the field. Daugherty totaled 14 points in the second half on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Tipton and Carly Grady (Keyser, W. Va./Kyser) each added six points in the frame to go along with Daugherty's 14. The solid second-half would not be enough, however, as the Bison fell 90-72.

Despite the loss, the Bison shot very efficiently from the field, posting a season best 52 percent shooting from the floor in the contest.

Individually, Daugherty led all scorers with 24 points in the contest. It marked the first time in her career that she has posted 20+ points in back-to-back games, as this performance came on the heels of her career-best 26-point night against Grove City on Wednesday. Daugherty has now scored 20-plus points in five games this season and has achieved double-digit scoring in 11 of her last 13 games.

Other leaders for the Bison included Tipton and Hayley Holenka (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside). Tipton was the only other Bison in double figures, finishing the contest with 14 points to go along with three assists and two steals. Holenka posted nine points and added a team-high eight rebounds.

The Bison will be back in action on Wednesday, January 28 as they return home for the first of a three-game hone stand against Geneva College. The contest is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
