Rebounding And Threes Push EMU Women Past Roanoke

More news about: Eastern Mennonite

SALEM, VA --- EMU's basketball women pulled away from host Roanoke College in the second half Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 65-46 ODAC victory.  At 7-1 in league play, the Royals kept pace with Randolph-Macon to be tied atop the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings.

The women fell behind early in the game, but then held Roanoke scoreless for a 5:40 span to get in front.  While the Royals weren't lights out on offense during the stretch, they scored 10 unanswered to flip ahead 18-10, capped by a Marla zumFelde (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) three pointer with 7:29 left in the half.

With eight seconds to go, zumFelde drained her third triple of the period to give EMU momentum and a 30-21 lead at the break.

The lead hovered between 10 and 13 points until zumFelde nailed back-to-back threes for a 61-42 lead, EMU's biggest of the game at that point.  With less than six minutes to play, Roanoke never recovered.

Despite shooting a pedestrian 38.8% from the floor, the Royals held Roanoke to 31.6% and simply dominated the glass.  Eastern Mennonite grabbed 23 offensive boards, as all 10 women to see the floor had at least one offensive rebound, and controlled rebounding 48-33.  EMU was also 10-32 from three point range, while the Maroons were 3-16.

ZumFelde was 6-11 from outside for a team best 18 points.  The senior broke out of a mini slump with the outburst as she had scored a combined 12 points in the three previous games.

Jess Rheinheimer (Manheim, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) hit a pair of three pointers and charted 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Shakeerah Sykes (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) added 10 counters. Jonae Guest (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) was good for nine points and five boards, including four on the offensive end.  Alisa Brown (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) had a game high four assists.

Cary Beahm led Roanoke with 20 points and seven rebounds, but nobody else scored more than six points.

The Royals are now 13-3 overall as they come home to take on rival Bridgewater College.  The date with the Eagles is Tuesday night at 7:00pm in Yoder Arena.
