SCHENECTADY, NY -- Molly McLaughlin scored a game high 11 points and Angela Botiba had 10 rebounds to lead the Skidmore College women's basketball team to a 49-35 win over Union College in a Liberty League contest Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Thoroughbreds improved to 10-5 overall and remain undefeated in the league (6-0), while the Dutchwomen fell to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Kelly Donnelly added nine points and Ella Scheuerell had seven rebounds for Skidmore, which won despite shooting 29% in this contest that produced strong defense from both squads. Skidmore held Union to 24% shooting. Allie Keller added three steals for the guests.
Union was led by Kate Thompson, who joined Botiba with 10 rebounds, and Cailin Schmeer had nine points. Abby Katz had eight rebounds and Natalie Leone added seven boards to lead Union to a 45-44 rebounding edge.
The Dutchwomen had a three point lead at halftime, 18-15. and it was 9-9 with 9:37 remaining in the first half. The teams forced 19 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Union led 20-17 in the second half after a jumper by Jenni Barra 20 seconds into the half. Union led by one at 22-21 with 13:09 left after Leone's second free throw. But then Skidmore went on a game changing 18-0 run over the next 5:26 and six points came from Migle Vilunaite in that span. Skidmore was up by as much as 19 at 43-24 with 5:30 elft, and Union got as close as 14 twice.
The Dutchwomen close out a three game home week Saturday at 2 p.m. against RPI.
