Calvin Women's Basketball Defeats Rochester College 76-53

The Calvin women's basketball team improved to 16-0 Friday night a 76-53 non-conference victory over the visiting Rochester College Warriors.

Calvin used a 20-5 run over the final 6:12 of the first half to take a 41-16 halftime lead. The Knights then scored the first 17 points of the second half to build a 58-16 lead.

Rochester (7-17) chipped away at Calvin's reserves later, using a 20-3 run to close to within 23 at 67-44.

Calvin struggled from the perimeter and from the free throw line but forced Rochester into 31 turnovers which led to 29 points for the Knights.

Senior Breanna Verkaik led Calvin with 18 points and six rebounds while senior teammates Kayla Engelhard and Hannah Acre had 15 and 10 points respectively. Engelhard added six rebounds and five assists while Acre had six rebounds, five steals and three assists. Sophomore Anna Timmer added nine points and three steals.

Rochester college was led by Keearra Brown with 14 points and nine rebounds while Jackie Highstreet had 11 points and 7 boards.

Calvin shot 42.3 percent from the field but was just 9 of 22 (.409) from the free throw line and just 7 of 30 (.233) from three-point range. Rochester shot 35.8 percent from the floor overall and held a 45-41 rebounding edge.

Calvin will host Illinois Tech in another non-conference game on Saturday with opening tip set for 6 p.m.
