Claremont, Calif. - The Redlands Women's Basketball team used 11-0 and 8-0 runs midway through the second half to pull ahead and then hung on late for a 61-55 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The Sagehens were led by the fifth double-double in six SCIAC games from sophomore forward Basha Brulee-Wills (16 points, 10 rebounds), but slip to 2-13 overall and 1-5 in the SCIAC. Redlands, which was led by 15 points from Victoria Fakalata, sees its record improve to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Pomona-Pitzer led 26-24 at the half and went ahead 35-28 with 16 minutes left on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Kacie Hitomi. The Bulldogs then scored the game's next 11 points, capped off by an Allison Siksnus lay-up, to pull ahead 39-35 with 10:36 to go.
The Sagehens responded to the 11-0 run, though, with six straight points of their own as sophomore guard McKenna VanderKley knocked down a three-pointer and Brulee-Wills followed with a three-point play to give Pomona-Pitzer the lead back at 41-39.
The pendulum swung back towards the Bulldogs, though, who answered with an 8-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Caitlin Ciardella with 6:30 to go to take a 47-41. After the Sagehens got back to within 47-45, Brinsley Farry connected from beyond the arc to push the lead to five.
The Sagehens had one last rally, as Brulee-Wills scored on a layup with 2:00 left to close it to 57-55. After two Redlands foul shots, Brulee-Wills drove with 58 seconds left for a potential lay-up to cut it to two, but her basket was waved off on a charge call, and the Bulldogs were able to hold on for the win.
VanderKley finished with 12 points for the Sagehens, while sophomore guard Alaina Woo was also in double figures with 10 points, and junior forward Amelia Hummel pulled down 10 rebounds. Fakalata was the only Redlands player in double figures with 15, while Ciardella had a solid all-around game with nine points, seven assists and five steals.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Sixth Street rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 5 p.m.
