CLEVELAND – Junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) posted her fourth career double-double, and the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team grabbed some momentum headed into conference action with a 61-50 victory versus Ohio Northern University on Saturday at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (6-5) complete the program's 10th straight season with a winning record versus non-conference opponents.
Mummey scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. In addition, senior guard Rachel Beaty (Carrollton, Texas/Hebron) came off of the bench and scored a season-high 13 points with four three-pointers.
The Polar Bears (8-2), limited to just 29% shooting from the field, were led by Jordan Kimes with a game-high 15 points.
In a low-scoring first half, Ohio Northern moved ahead by a high of nine when Amy Bullimore hit a layup to make the score 23-14 with 3:57 on the clock. The Spartans then finished the period on a 7-0 run and pulled to within 23-21 as Mummey converted a three-point play at the 1:15 mark.
CWRU extended its run into the second as a Mummey jumper knotted the score at 23-23 with 19:26 left to play. The next 10 minutes were back-and-forth, but a Beaty three-pointer at 9:13 put the Spartans in the driver seat with a 47-43 advantage. After a Kimes bucket at 7:48, the Spartans opened the game up with a 7-0 run which culminated in two Beaty free throws, making the score 54-45 with 5:07 remaining.
The Spartans are now idle until the 2015 University Athletic Association opener at rival Carnegie Mellon University at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10 in Pittsburgh.
