Spartan Women Fall Short in Comeback Attempt at Kenyon, 51-47

GAMBIER, Ohio – Despite erasing an 11-point deficit in the second half, the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team lost at Kenyon College, 51-47, on Tuesday evening at Tomsich Arena.

The Spartans drop to 2-2 for the young season, while the Ladies improve to 2-4.

Sophomore guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) led the Spartans with 13 points to go along with three assists.

Sarah Hobbs scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds for Kenyon. Bailey Dominguez, who hit a key three-pointer with just over a minute remaining, added 14 points.

CWRU last held a lead in the contest when McCoy hit her second three-pointer to make the score 7-5 at the 13:06 mark. Kenyon then scored seven in a row and led 12-7 following a Hobbs layup at 11:10. After a Spartan three-pointer, the hosts created some distance with a 10-1 run culminating in a Miranda Diesz trey with 7:33 left before half. Overall, Kenyon outscored the Spartans, 17-4, in building the 22-11 advantage.

Refusing to go away, the Spartans answered with a 10-2 spurt to pull within 24-21 as senior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) hit a jumper at 2:24. The Ladies then scored five of the next seven to get into halftime ahead, 29-23.

In the second half, Kenyon's lead reached 11 on three separate occasions, the last coming with 9:44 remaining as Ifeoma Archimalo connected on a jumper to make the score 40-29. From there, the Spartan comeback began, and a jumper by senior forward Berit Eppard (Edgewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) capped a 13-2 run which tied the score at 42-42 with 5:28 left to play.

Four minutes of close play followed before Dominguez hit the deciding three-pointer to put the hosts ahead 49-45 with 1:16 on the clock. The Spartans were unable to draw even in the final minute.

CWRU returns home to host Wittenberg University on Saturday, November 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
