CLEVELAND – Sophomore guard Jessica McCoy (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) scored a team-high 17 points, and the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team knocked Wittenberg University from the unbeaten ranks by a score of 66-55 on Saturday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans move to 3-2 for the young season, while the Tigers drop to 5-1.
McCoy converted three shots from beyond the arc and pulled down five rebounds. Senior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) posted 12 points and seven rebounds, while junior post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added 10 points and eight boards.
Katelyn Haralamos scored a game-high 16 points for Wittenberg, but the visitors were held to 24 points under their season average.
The Spartans held the Tigers scoreless for the opening 6:14 and without a field goal for the first 7:32. That allowed the hosts to build a 9-0 advantage when senior forward Berit Eppard (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) hit a jumper with 16:56 left in the half. The CWRU advantage reached 11, at 14-3, following a McCoy three-pointer at 12:19, but the Tigers were able to rally with a 12-2 run that cut the deficit to 16-15 as Haralamos hit a jumper at 7:26. Undaunted, the Spartans answered with a 10-4 spurt to rebuild their advantage to 26-19 as Eppard scored a jumper with 3:16 on the clock. That seven-point advantage would hold into the half as CWRU led 31-24.
In the second, the Spartans outscored the Tigers 19-11 over the opening 6:55 and led 50-35 when freshman forward Kara Hageman (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) hit a layup with 13:05 remaining. The home lead didn't dip below 10 the rest of the way and grew to 16 on three separate occasions.
The Spartans are back in action on the road this coming Wednesday, December 3 at The College of Wooster at 5:30 p.m.
