Dumas and Rando Lead Cortland Women Past Plattsburgh, 65-56

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) and senior Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) combined for 37 points as Cortland defeated defending SUNYAC champion Plattsburgh, 65-56.

Cortland (11-2) holds sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC with a 6-1 record, a half game ahead of Geneseo. The Red Dragons will host the Knights Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. after losing at Geneseo this past Tuesday. Cortland is ranked 24th nationally in the latest USA Today/WBCA Div. III poll and is among the "others receiving votes" section in the latest D3hoops.com poll.

Dumas finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. She made 8-of-15 shots from the floor, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Rando scored 17 points, one shy of her career high. She hit 3-of-6 shots from the 3-point arc and all six of her free throws.

Sophomore Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) added nine points and three assists, senior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists and senior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) totaled five assists and five rebounds.

Plattsburgh (6-7, 3-3 SUNYAC) featured three double-figure scorers. Devona Paul finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Brittany Marshall scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and handed out six assists and Stephanie Linder made 4-of-8 3-pointers and ended with 12 points and three steals.

Cortland trailed 20-11 midway through the first half and 27-19 with 4:18 left before scoring eight straight on a Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) 3-pointer, a Wolstenholme layup and a Chapko 3-pointer to tie the game at 27-27. The Red Dragons turned a 29-27 halftime deficit into a 38-32 lead four minutes into the second half, but the Cardinals eventually fought back to take a 43-41 lead on Paul's 3-point play with 8:09 left.

The Red Dragons responded with a decisive 12-0 run over the next five minutes to take control. Dumas scored eight of those points, including back-to-back 3-pointers, and Chapko's layup with 3:01 left put Cortland up 53-43. Plattsburgh eventually got back within 59-54 on a Marshall 3-pointer with 32 seconds left, but Rando salted the game away with six foul shots over the last 26 ticks.
