More news about: Trine

ANGOLA, IND.-- Trine's depth played a huge role in a 59-50 victory over Adrian in MIAA-action Wednesday night at Hershey Hall.

Ten players scored for the Thunder, who got big performances from several players off the bench during the game's deciding stretch. Taylor Cole (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Shepherd) scored a season-high nine points off the bench, and notched a pair of steals. Whitney Shaffer (Tipton, Ind./Tri-Central) tied for the team lead with nine points, knocking down 3-of-5 attempts from long range. Jorden York scored 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting to lead the Bulldogs, who were held to a season-low in scoring. Trine improves to 10-5 overall, 4-2 in the MIAA. Adrian falls to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Seven players scored between five and nine points for Trine. The Thunder bench outscored their Bulldog counterparts by a 23-15 margin. Trine converted 21 Adrian turnovers into 26 points.

York was the lone Bulldog to reach double-figures. Adrian entered the game with five players averaging 10 or more points per game. Brigitte Zavithsanos scored nine points and added five rebounds. The Bulldogs held a 49-37 edge on the glass.

The Thunder held the lead from the 11:10 mark of the first half until an Amber McCullough layup gave Adrian a 34-33 lead with 11:53 remaining in the contest. During that span, Trine led by as much as nine points. A layup-and-one by Antoniea McElroy gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the second half at 43-41 with 7:14 to play.

After being held scoreless to that point, Kayla Dunn (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) answered with a pair of free throws and a three to give the Thunder the lead back. Alivia Recker (Arlington, Ohio/Arlington) came away with a big steal and converted a transition layup to push the lead to 48-43.

Recker scored five points on the night, and came away with all three of her steals in the final six minutes of play. Dunn scored all seven of her points in the final 7:02.

The Thunder converted five of their next six free throw attempts, with a pair of Adrian buckets mixed in to make the score 53-47 with 3:27 to play.

Cole then picked a ballhandler clean, and went coast-to-coast for the layup to push the Thunder lead to eight with 2:34 remaining. Both of Cole's steals on the night led to Trine buckets. A Nikky Moan (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) layup pushed the score to 10 to put the game out of reach. Moan finished the game with eight points.

Katelyn Sager (Kell, Ill./Salem Community) provided a much-needed rebounding presence off the bench for Trine, grabbing a season-high five boards. The senior scored two points.

Trine begins a four-game road swing this Saturday, Jan. 17 when they travel to Alma. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
