Prospects didn't appear bright for the UW-Superior women's basketball team at halftime of their game with UW-LaCrosse Saturday afternoon.
Not only did UW-Superior connect on just 17.8 percent of their shots in the opening 20 minutes, they found themselves trailing the home-standing Eagles 29-18 as the second half approached.
The Yellowjackets dusted themselves off after the break however, outscoring UW-LaCrosse 46-30 after halftime to pull out a key 64-59 road victory at Mitchell Hall in LaCrosse.
The Yellowjackets (10-4 overall, 5-1 WIAC) not only picked up their second straight victory, they also gave themselves some momentum heading into another important contest with UW-Platteville on Wednesday.
UW-Superior found themselves in a hole early as the Eagles jumped out to a 16-4 lead after a layup by Maggi Bishop with 14:55 remaining in the opening half.
Scores from Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) and Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) brought the Yellowjackets to within 24-16 with 5:58 left before two free throws from Kara Selk and three points from Jenna
Anderson propelled UW-LaCrosse to a 29-18 edge at the break.
The Eagles (6-8, 1-4) expanded their lead early in the second half when a fast-break layup from Bishop gave UW-LaCrosse their largest lead the game at 42-26 with 14:01 left in regulation.
But the Yellowjackets came roaring back, scoring the next 11 points to cut the deficit to 42-37 after a three-pointer by Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) with 10:35 left in regulation. Lindberg scored seven of the 11 points with Linzmeier also connecting on a pair of jumpers during the burst.
UW-LaCrosse increased their lead again over the next 4:50, upping their advantage to 49-41 after another score by Anderson with 6:45 showing on the clock.
UW-Superior refused to back down however and went on a 12-4 run to even matters at 53-53 after a Linzmeier jumper with 3:02 left in the contest. Linzmeier went on score UW-Superior's next seven points to give the Yellowjackets a 60-56 edge in the final minute of regulation.
Elise Denoyer brought the Eagles within 60-59 with a three-point play with 17 seconds remaining in the second half.
The Yellowjackets closed the door from there as Lindberg connected on four straight free throws in the last 16 seconds to seal the win for UW-Superior.
Linzmeier finished with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Lindberg meanwhile finished with 13 points and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line for the game.
Rachel Atchison finished with 14 points for the Eagles while Cameron Chapin had 10 points as well.
Opening tip between the Yellowjackets and Pioneers is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Platteville.
