The Bearcat women's basketball team improved to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a home victory over Grove City College. The final score was 67-56.
The game was close throughout much of the first 15 minutes, with both teams struggling to score. Just past the midway point of the half, a jumper by Jessica Welch tied the game at 12-12, and SVC took its first lead since the opening minute at the 8:20 mark, when Hannah Carroll hit a three to make it a 15-14 game.
Drew Meeker hit a pair of threes in a 40-second span that put SVC in front, 21-17 with 6:30 to go, and the lead later ran to seven points (28-21) after a bucket by Taylor Mathers.
A baseline drive by Susie Ellis followed Mathers' score, and after a Grove City tally, SVC scored the final four points of the half, two each from Mathers and Ellis, to take a 34-23 lead into the break.
Mathers had the hot hand at the outset of the second half, helping SVC build the lead to 13 with 17:23 remaining (40-27), and the lead held steady. A runner by Jasmine Weems with 8:20 on the clock made the score 49-36, and Mathers followed with a conventional three-point play. With 6:55 to go, a score by Mara Benvenuti ran the lead to 54-37, and the Bearcats never looked back, cruising to an 11-point victory.
Mathers led all scorers with 19 points, while Benvenuti added 10. Ally Schmidt scored 9, followed by Ellis with 8 off the bench. Grove City outrebounded SVC by a 38-27 margin, with Schmidt and Mathers grabbing four boards each. SVC caused 24 Wolverine turnovers, with Schmidt accounting for three steals.
Lexie Arkwright led the visitors with 15 points, while Kathryn Erbelding scored 11. Cayley McClean had a game-high 7 rebounds.
Saint Vincent will return to action on Wednesday (January 14), hosting Washington & Jefferson in the Carey Center at 5:30PM.
