NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomore Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) led all scorers with 18 points and classmate Ashley Snyder (Foxboro, Mass.) recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as visiting Babson College rallied to pull away from Coast Guard Academy, 75-62, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Roland Hall.

With the win, Babson snapped its two-game losing streak to move to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Coast Guard, which had won two straight games, drops to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.

Pickering, who went 10-of-11 at the free throw line, also pulled down six rebounds and dished out five assists for the Beavers, who shot 86.8 percent (33-of-38) at the free throw line in the win. Senior Lindsey Roche (Arlington, Mass.), junior Linnett Graber (Roseland, N.J.) and sophomore Taylor Russell (Braintree, Mass.) each contributed eight points apiece, while sophomore Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) and first-year Brenna LeGacy (Attleboro, Mass.) both added seven points.

Junior Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, Mass.) scored 17 points to go along with five assists to pace the Bears. Classmate Torie Sutherland (Houston, Texas) added 11 points and six rebounds, while senior Leigha Steinbeck (Parker, Colo.) chipped in eight points to go along with five boards.

Coast Guard started fast, making eight of its first 11 shots, and outscoring the Green and White 12-4 in the paint to build a 22-11 lead on a layup by Sutherland with 10:51 to go in the opening period. Senior Dani Knox (Centerville, Va.) gave the Bears their biggest lead of the game at 28-15 with a pair of free throws at the 6:42 mark before the Beavers closed the half with a 19-5 run to grab a one-point halftime lead.

Babson went 12-of-12 at the free throw line and took advantage of 11 second-chance points during the spurt. Snyder and Russell combined for 12 points, 10 of which came at the charity stripe, and the Beavers held Coast Guard to just three field goals over the final eight minutes of the stanza to take a 34-33 lead into the locker room.

The Bears used back-to-back three-pointers from Fornaro and senior Jamie Waterman (Jasper, Ga.) to move back in front 41-38 with 17:04 left in the game, but Babson responded with a quick 8-1 spurt, keyed by five points from Pickering, to take the lead for good at 45-42 with 15:48 to play. Two free throws from LeGacy, followed by consecutive hoops from Pickering, LeGacy, and junior Marissa Cicchetti (Mansfield, Mass.) then sparked an 8-0 run that gave the Green and White its first double-digit lead at 60-49 with 8:23 remaining in the contest.

Coast Guard cut its deficit to single digits six times, getting as close as eight twice over the final 3:18, but a trey by Roche and seven late free throws helped Babson close out the victory.

Despite shooting just 37.7 percent (20-of-53) from the floor, the Beavers scored 16 second-chance points and took advantage of 18 points off 16 Bears' turnovers. The Green and White also held a 44-24 advantage on the glass and scored 61 of its 75 points in the paint or at the free throw line.

Coast Guard shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the field and just 3-of-16 from beyond the arc on the afternoon.

Babson returns to action on Monday when it hosts fourth-ranked Tufts at 7 p.m., while the Bears will host Pine Manor on Thursday at 7 p.m.
