The UW-Superior women's basketball team closed out the first half of the 2014-15 season riding high with a six-game winning streak. On Monday, the Yellowjackets began the second half of the campaign looking for another impressive win.

UW-Superior did just that, taking command late in the first half against the Marian Sabres and never letting up to post a 71-55 victory at Sadoff Gymnasium.

In defeating the host Sabres, the Yellowjackets (7-3) got another big game from Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders), who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds in just 25 minutes of play. Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) also had a stand out performance for the Yellowjackets with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field while Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) chipped in with eight.

Marian(7-3) jumped out to a quick lead in the first half as three-point shots from Nicole Paulus and Sarah Olewinski staked the Sabres to a 10-2 advantage with 15:34 left in the first half.

UW-Superior scored the next eight points to even matters at 10-10 on Lekson's layup at the 13:34 mark.

The Sabres responded by scoring the next four points and still led 18-17 on a score by Courtney Klister with 8:45 showing on the clock.

But the Yellowjackets took command from there, reclaiming the lead at 19-18 following a driving layup from Brynn Liljander (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) before outscoring Marian 15-6 over the final 8:28 for a 36-24 edge at the intermission.

UW-Superior continued to pull away in the second half, scoring eight of the first 10 points in the frame for a commanding 44-26 advantage after Linzmeier's steal and score with 16:56 remaining in regulation.

The Sabres never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way as UW-Superior held Marian to just 31.6 percent shooting from the field.

UW-Superior faces Alverno College on Tuesday in Milwaukee. Opening tipoff against the Inferno is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.3 FM with Matt Johnson on the call.
