Colby women's basketball wins Florida opener, now 8-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- Brooke Chandor was 6-for-9 from 3-point range on the way to game-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds for the Colby College women's basketball team in an 80-60 win over Alma (Mich.) College on Sunday at Embry-Riddle University.


Colby improved to 8-1 overall and will take on Coast Guard Academy at 4 p.m. Monday at Embry-Riddle. Coast Guard (3-4 overall) took a 75-60 win against Nazareth College on Sunday.
The Mules had four players with 16 points or more. Caitlyn Nolan was 6-for-9 from the field and scored 17 points, while Mia Diplock also scored 17 after hitting seven of her 10 free throws.
Carylanne Wolfington finished with 16 points and six rebounds for Colby.
The Mules shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from 3-point range and made 17 free throws. Colby had a slight edge in rebounding at 38-35.
Haley Driscoll had nine points for the Mules and point guard MaryKate Caverly added a game-high six assists.
Alma (5-6 overall) received 13 points apiece from Grace Wheeler and Reanna Zink. 
The first half was a battle, with the game tied 12-12 after 6:37 of action. Alma went on a 7-0 scoring run for a 19-12 margin, but the Mules went on a big 17-4 scoring run to make it 29-23 with 4:09 to play. Colby went into halftime with a 33-30 lead.
The Mules received back-to-back 3-point shots from Chandor and Diplock to push the lead to 39-32 just 1:58 into the second half. Alma never got closer than five points the rest of the way, but the game stayed in reach for the first 11 minutes of play.
With the score 54-47, Colby went on a 9-0 scoring run for a 16-point lead at 63-47 with 6:50 left. Chandor and Wolfington hit 3-point shots during the run. The margin reached 21 points (77-56) when Diplock nailed two free throws with 2:10 to go.
