BAYAMON, Puerto Rico--One of the hardest parts of Monday's Eastern University Women's Basketball game against la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Rio Piedras may have been just getting to the game.

The Eastern Eagles rolled past the UPRRP Jerezanas 58-45 in a game in which each active Eagle received at least 10 minutes of playing time. The Eagles, however, had an adventure arriving at the warm, open-air stadium at a different UPR campus with a lost bus and players and team personnel battling a sudden stomach bug.

Once the Eagles arrived at the UPR Bayamon stadium (six minutes before the scheduled start time), the game was bumped back another half hour to give the Eagles some time to warm up.

Eastern shot below average, at 33.3 percent for the second game in a row, but compensated by dominating on the boards, especially on the offensive end. The Eagles collected 19 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Jerezanas 52-37 overall. Meghan Nowak led the Eagles with 12 rebounds, and Kaleigh Boreman and Emily Lavin each had nine boards (five offensive).

Nowak led the Eagles with 24 points, picking up her eighth double-double of the year and seventh 20-point game of the season. She shot 10-for-18 from the floor (55.6 percent), more than doubling her shooting performance in Saturday's win.

Emily Carmel added eight points and Boreman and Lavin each added six.

The UPRRP Jerezanas shot 19-for-58 in the game (32.8 percent) and were led in scoring by Gabriela Maldonado (13 points) and Thaliangely Torres (12 points).

Eastern went on an 8-0 run early in the first half, capped off by five straight points by Carmel. The Eagles' lead reached 15 with an Amber Anderson 3-pointer with 8:19 to go in the first half and stretched as wide as 20 with 3:06 to go after Nowak hit a pair of free throws.

In the second half, Eastern took a 54-29 lead with eight minutes left after Amanda Riiff found Meghan Nowak in the paint for a post-up layup.

The Jerezanas cut Eastern's lead to 13 points in the final seconds of the game, but the final decision was never in danger.

Eastern Women's Basketball, now 9-3, gets to enjoy the rest of its Christmas break. The Eagles return to action Jan. 7 at PSU-Brandywine and then play at last year's national champion FDU-Florham on Jan. 14. Eastern leaves Puerto Rico on Tuesday afternoon. The players and staff would like to thank the Eagle Club members that helped finance this trip for their generous support.
