ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The No. 3-team in the NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll proved too much for the Pacific women's basketball team on Saturday evening, as the Boxers fell 85-39 to Alaska Anchorage inside of the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Boxers hung tight with the Seawolves in the opening 10 minutes after Leah Bonner got UAA the first two points of the game 19 seconds after the opening tip. The final game of the Seawolf Hoops Classic soon saw a 2-2 scoreline on a jumper in the paint from Sarah Curl (So., Portland, Ore.).
After Alaska Anchorage pushed out to a four-point advantage a fast break jumper from Curl returned the game to a two-point difference. With 14:45 left in the first period, Nani Ostrom (Sr., Juneau, Alaska) hit a jumper to push the scoreline to 8-6 in the Seawolves' advantage.
The next four minutes saw Alaska Anchorage pushed out to a six-point lead, before Olivia Cook (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Kaila Johnson (Sr., McKinleyville, Calif.) scored on back-to-back possessions to pull Pacific back within two of the home side.
Bonner's jumper at the 9:28 mark, triggered a run for the Seawolves that would see their advantage reach as many as 24 points before time expired in the opening period.
The second period saw Alaska Anchorage prove why it is one of the top teams in the nation at the Division II level, as the Seawolves extended their lead to as many as 48 points before the final buzzer sounded on an 85-39 Alaska Anchorage victory.
Cook led Pacific with nine points and eight rebounds, before earning a spot on the Seawolf Hoops Classic All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the game.
Ostrom finished with eight points, while Lauren Lykins (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) notched a team-high three assists.
The Boxers return to action on January 2, 2015, when Pacific opens Northwest Conference paly with a 6 p.m. meeting with Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Wash.
