Yellowjackets use big second half to down Eau Claire

A three-game losing streak to start the season wasn't what the UW-Superior women's basketball team had in mind when they kicked off the 2014-15 campaign. The past five games have proven why.

Playing one of their more complete games of the season, the Yellowjackets broke open a close game early in the second half and never looked back on the way to posting a 74-58 victory over UW-Eau Claire at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium Wednesday night.

Not only did UW-Superior extend their current winning streak to five games, they also maintained their perfect start to the WIAC conference campaign with the holiday break fast approaching.

UW-Eau Claire (4-5 overall, 1-2 WIAC) was impressive in the early going, jumping out to a 13-5 advantage on a Rachel Egdorf layup with 13:25 remaining in the first half.

The Yellowjackets (5-3, 3-0) began cutting into the deficit behind two three-point shots from Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) before a rebound basket by Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) made it a 15-13 Blugolds' advantage with 11:34 showing on the clock.

UW-Eau Claire came right back to score the next 10 points, taking their largest lead of the game at 25-13 following Ellen Blacklock's layup at the 8:17 mark of the opening half.

The Yellowjackets slowly chipped away however, outscoring the Blugolds 21-8 over the final 7:57 to take a 34-33 lead into the intermission thanks to Lindberg's third three-pointer of the half with 41 seconds left in the half.

UW-Superior continued to surge early in the second half, scoring the first seven points of the frame to build a 41-33 after a layup by Liljander at the 18:39 mark.

The Yellowjackets took their first double-digit lead of the evening with 17:14 left on an inside score by Vanessa Lebens (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) before scoring eight straight points during a 2:23 span of the second half for a commanding 66-51 advantage after Lindberg's fourth three-pointer of the night at the 5:43 mark of regulation.

UW-Eau Claire never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the Yellowjackets held the Blugolds to just 35.7 percent shooting after halftime.

Brynn Liljander (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) led all scorers with 18 points while Lindberg finished with 12 for UW-Superior. The Yellowjackets also connected on 10-of-18 from three-point range and forced 18 UW-Eau Claire turnovers.

The Blugolds were paced by Courtney Lewis with 13 points. Teenie Lichtfuss finished with 11 points for UW-Eau Claire as well.

UW-Superior closes out the first half of the season Saturday with a non-conference contest against Northland College in Ashland starting at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on tape delay staring about 7:30 p.m. with Matt Johnson on the call.
