CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) scored 26 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked four shots as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 68-49, in a SUNYAC matchup. The Red Dragons mounted a 19-0 run early in the second half to break open a close game and improve to 2-0 in the league and 6-1 overall.
Sophomore Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) connected on 4-of-5 of her 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and three assists. Freshman Kerry McHugh (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) added nine points, all on 3-pointers, and senior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) totaled seven points, three assists and four rebounds.
Fredonia (2-4, 0-2 SUNYAC) was led by Sabrina Macaulay's 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jamie Curry chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists and Jacque Law scored nine points. Kaylyn Billups pulled down eight rebounds and led the Blue Devils with four assists.
Cortland led by four, 34-30, after basically an evenly-played first half. Dumas, who finished the game 11-of-21 shooting from the floor, reached her fifth double-double of the season before halftime. She had 13 points and 11 boards at the break.
The Red Dragons scored the first four points of the second half, but Fredonia answered with seven straight, capped by Curry's 3-pointer, and Cortland was up only 38-37 with 16:44 remaining. The Red Dragons, however, kept the Blue Devils off the scoreboard for the next five minutes as they extended their lead to 57-37. Dumas scored nine points during the streak, starting with a 3-pointer at the 16:22 mark and ending with a jumper with 11:50 left. The run also featured five points by Chapko, including a 3-pointer, along with a McHugh trey and Minor layup.
Fredonia got back to within 59-46 on a Law 3-pointer with 5:34 left and missed a three that could have cut the deficit to 10 on its next possession. Cortland then put the game away with a 7-0 run that finished with Minor's 3-point play with 2:50 remaining.
Cortland takes a break for final exams before returning to action at SUNY Poly (formerly SUNYIT) on Saturday, December 13 at noon in a non-league game.
