Providence, R.I.-Freshman guard Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, MA) scored a career-high 26 points and sophomore guard Alex Moore (West Newbury, MA) contributed 22 points as the Rhode Island College women's basketball opened Little East Conference play by topping Eastern Connecticut, 64-60, on Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center.

Following a see-saw battle in the opening minutes, the Anchorwomen (2-6, 1-0 LEC) opened up a five point lead, 11-6, when Korzec took a feed from Moore and sank a layup with 13:46 remaining. RIC kept its advantage and with the score 15-10, Eastern Connecticut (4-4, 0-1 LEC) ran off eight straight points, capped by an old fashion three-point play by junior forward Jill Ritrosky (Pittsfield, MA), to make the score 18-15 with 7:10 left in the half.

The Anchorwomen responded with an 18-5 run over the next 5:51 to take a commanding 33-23 lead with 1:19 left in the half. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Julia DePoi (Brookfield, CT) with 48 seconds remaining cut the RIC lead down to seven, 33-26, which is where it would stay entering the half.

The Anchorwomen opened up a 17 point lead, 47-30, with 15:55 left in the game when Moore nailed a three-ball off a feed from Korzec. The Warriors kept battling throughout the half and cut the lead down to three, 51-48, on a layup by DePoi with 8:44 left.

The Anchorwomen increased their lead to as large as seven, but a furious rally by Eastern saw the RIC advantage trimmed down to one, 61-60, with 1:56 to play. The Anchorwomen made 3-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to close out the victory.

Korzec led all scorers with her career-best effort and also chipped in with five rebounds and three assists. Moore's effort was two off her career mark as she added seven boards and four steals. The Anchorwomen shot 40.0 percent (22-for-55) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-for-12) from downtown and 72.7 percent (16-for-22) from the charity stripe for the game.

Eastern was led by a Ritrosky double-double with 11 points and 19 rebounds, while DePoi chipped in 14 points and four boards. The Warriors shot 31.0 percent (22-for-71) from the field for the game, while shooting 25.9 percent (7-for-27) from three-point range and 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from the free throw line.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Amherst on Wednesday, Dec. 10 (6 p.m.).
