Women’s Basketball Falls to Cross-City Rival SUNY Oneonta

More news about: Hartwick

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick (1-5) trailed SUNY Oneonta (4-1) by as little as one point with under 14 minutes to play in the second half but a critical 14-0 Red Dragon run over the next four minutes would be too much to overcome in a 57-42 setback Tuesday night at Oneonta's Dewar Arena. The Hawks trimmed the deficit to eight points with just over four minutes to go but the hosts scored the game's final seven points to earn the win.
Junior Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) was the lone Hawk in double figures with 11 points. She also tied for a team-high with five rebounds. Anna Hickey (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) scored six points for 'Wick and Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland), Jess Bellai (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont), and Courtney Cirillo (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) netted five points apiece.
Scoring was limited in the early stages of the game as both teams combined for just four points over the opening seven minutes of the contest. Seven straight points for the Red Dragons handed them an 11-4 lead with under 10 minutes remaining in the opening period.
The Hawks pulled to within five on two Cirillo free throws at 4:50 but Oneonta answered with five consecutive points to open up a 10-point margin, 23-13, with a minute and a half left. A Vonasek free throw and two straight layups from Foreman with under a minute to play closed the gap to five, 23-18, at halftime.
After an early Red Dragon bucket in the second half, a Bellai three-point play and a Christina Graziadei (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany Central) layup made it a two-point game, 25-23, with 17:52 remaining. Hartwick cut the Red Dragon lead to two points three times in the next two minutes and made it 30-29 on a Foreman free throw with 13:52 left.
A three-pointer from Oneonta's Brianna Spector would trigger the big 14-0 run over the next four minutes. The Hawks would miss five shots from the floor in the span until Hickey drained a three-pointer to stop the bleeding.
Hartwick trailed by 13 points with just over five minutes left in the contest, but another three from Hickey and then two Vonasek free throws made it an eight-point, 50-42 deficit with 4:21 showing on the clock. The Hawks had a chance to inch closer but turned the ball over. On the other end, Oneonta's Sarah Longto converted a three-point play and the Red Dragons were in front by double digits to stay.
Longto led four Oneonta players in double figures with 12 points. She also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Lyteshia Price, Caysea Cohen, and Tyra Harrison each had 10 points.
Foreman contributed five rebounds for the Hawks with Cirillo adding four. Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby), who was limited to a season-low four points, came away with a game-high five steals on the night.
Hartwick next plays on Thursday in a non-conference game at The Sage Colleges beginning at 7 p.m.
