Palmer Leads Warhawks to 75-72 Win on the Road

Palmer's 18 rebounds in the game, the highest individual statistic of the game, tied for the 16th most in a game in program history and the most since Tiffany Morton registered 19 boards in February of 2009.

A nine-point Warhawk run early in the first half gave UW-Whitewater an eight point advantage, 13-5 with 14:20 on the clock.

The Titans responded with five points to knock the lead down to three but the Warhawks quickly pushed the lead back to eight.

Illinois Wesleyan continued to chip away and took a 30-29 lead with 4:47 left in the half but UW-Whitewater regained the lead at the free throw line as Jaya Perkins dropped in two shots from the charity stripe to make it 31-30 in favor of the Warhawks with 4:16 remaining.

Reilly Steward drained a three two possessions later extending the lead to six, 36-30 with 3:12 left. The lead would hit six again with 1:15 left after two free throws from Malia Smith made it 38-32 and again as Brooke Trewyn found Emily Jensen open under the basket with just one second on the clock to give UW-Whitewater a 41-35 lead at intermission.

The Warhawks shot nearly 41% (13-32) from the field in the first twenty minutes adding 12-15 from the free throw line. Illinois Wesleyan also shot 41% (14-34) from the field but were just 4-9 from the charity stripe. UW-Whitewater ruled the glass with 28 rebounds including 10 on the offensive boards compared to 16 total for the Titans.

The first three minutes of the second half were scoreless. The Titans struck first and opened up a 13-3 run to recapture the lead, 48-44 with 14:18 on the clock.

Illinois Wesleyan pushed the lead to nine, 62-53 with 6:50 remaining when the Warhawks started to work their way back into the game.

Andrea Meinert swung the momentum UW-Whitewater's way with an old fashioned three point play to cut the lead to six, 62-56 with 6:35 on the clock. The teams traded baskets and a reverse layup by Andrea Olsen at the 5:26 mark made it 65-60.

A foul sent Illinois Wesleyan to the line but the Titans made good on just one of the opportunities. Kate McKay took advantage and cut the lead to two, 66-64, with back-to-back baskets and less than three minutes on the clock.

IWU's Shelby Gray stole some of the momentum with a three-pointer at the 2:22 mark to give the Titans a five point advantage when Palmer took over.

Palmer drained two free throws to make it 69-66 when once again the Titans responded with a layup to push the lead back to five.

Trewyn created a five-point swing for the Warhawks with a tip-in off of her own missed shot followed by an old fashioned three point play just seven seconds later to knot the game 71-71 with 41 seconds on the clock.

Illinois Wesleyan made just one of two at the line to take a 72-71 lead with 27 seconds remaining.

Palmer pulled down an offensive rebound, was fouled and went back to the line for two free throws to give the Warhawks a 73-72 lead. On the other end of the court, Palmer grabbed another rebound, was fouled and sealed the game with two more free throws that made it 75-72 with just four seconds on the clock.

UW-Whitewater outscored IWU 22-14 on points in the paint and 11-5 on second chance points in the final 20 minutes.

The Warhawks and Titans both shot 40% from the field in the game but UW-Whitewater made 21-26 attempts from the charity stripe compared to Illinois Wesleyan's 13-32. The Warhawks dominated the boards with 53 rebounds, 17 on the offensive end, compared to 35 for the Titans.

Palmer added 13 points, including a 7-8 performance from the free throw line, to her 18 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Trewyn led the Warhawk scorers with 14 points and added seven boards. Abbie Reeves pitched in ten points and added an assist and a steal.

Illinois Wesleyan's Gray led all scorers with 17 points on 6-10 from the field including 5-8 from long range.

UW-Whitewater will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday, December 3 in Kachel Gym against UW-Oshkosh at 7 pm.
