NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Four players scored in double figures, led by junior Tia Karapoulios(Cypress, Calif./Cypress)' first career double-double, but the Smith College basketball team dropped a 77-63 decision to Keene State College on Saturday afternoon.
Karapoulios recorded career-highs in both points (16) and rebounds (11) for her first career double-double while senior Alyssa Barrett (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) scored 16 points off the bench. First-year Samantha Alakai (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) added 11 points and sophomore Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway) chipped in 10 points for the Pioneers (1-3).
Keene State (2-2) was led by first-year Sandi Purcell (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne)'s 15 points while junior Ryanne Williams (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and sophomore Amanda Petrow (Methuen, Mass./Methuen) each notched double-doubles. Williams scored 11 points and grabbed 16 boards, while Petrow added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The two sides traded baskets through the early going of the first half, as the Pioneers took an 8-6 lead on a layup by Karapoulios with 14:24 remaining in the half. The Owls answered with a 7-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes to claim a 13-8 advantage. Smith responded with one of Barrett's four made three pointers, cutting the deficit to 13-11.
The contest remained a one possession game for most of the first stanza, as Castro's layup with 3:30 to play in the half cut Keene State's advantage down to three (30-27). The Owls ended the half on an 11-0 run, capped by a pair of made free throws from Purcell to put Keene State ahead 41-27 at intermission.
In the second half, the Pioneers continued to chip away at the Owls double-digit advantage, as a short jumper by Alakai made it a one possession game, 58-56, with 6:53 to go.
Keene State scored the next three points on a free throw and a layup by Petrow to take a 61-56 lead with 6:36 to play.
Following a layup by Karapoulios and a pair of free throws by Barrett that cut the Owls lead to 61-60, Keene State closed out the contest on a 16-3 run to secure the win.
The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a non-conference contest at Wentworth Institute of Technology, while the Owls host Trinity College on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
