Balanced scoring and an overall dominance on the backboards for the second straight night carried the University of Rochester to an 80-45 victory over Ferrum College in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Saturday night.
Al Leslie led the Yellowjackets with 14 points and nine rebounds in 15 minutes. Ally Zywicki and Kelsey Hurley scored 11 points each. Jillian Silvestri scored 10 points in six minutes. Rochester improved to 4-0.Rochester held a 56-35 edge on the glass, one night after out-rebounding Clarkson, 59-31. For Ferrum (1-2), Jacole Hairston had 17 points, Erin March scored 10, and Zarkia Mattox had seven plus nine rebounds. No other player scored at least six points.
Rochester's size inside made it difficult for Ferrum to get the ball inside to Kemani Crawford. In Friday's 69-49 victory over King's (PA), Crawford scored 19 points. She was 0-7 from the floor against Rochester and finished with three points, all at the line. She did record four assists, several of them on lobs to March.
With Zywicki hitting a pair of treys in the opening minutes, Rochester jumped in front, 10-0. The lead eventually grew to 14 (22-8) before a short dry spell brought Ferrum within 28-19 at the half.
Hairston hit a trey out of the left corner to bring the Panthers within eight, 34-26, early in the second half. Zywicki answered with a three-pointer for Rochester which went on an extended 32-9 run to push the lead to 66-35 with less than five minutes left.
Silvestri made a rare five-point play late in the game. She sank a three-pointer from the top of the key for a 75-42 edge. As the ball went through the net, she was fouled and sank both ends of a one-and-one.
Leslie was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Zywicki, Hairston, Mattox, Ashley Loggins of Clarkson, and Kayla Feairheller of King's (PA).
