More news about: Alverno

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- Alverno College lost a nonconference tilt to host University of Wisconsin-Platteville, 82-52, Saturday afternoon in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Inferno (1-2) led for most of the first half, including 17-13 with under 7 minutes to play, but the host Pioneers (3-1) went on a 13-0 run to pull in front for the final lead change of the contest.

Alverno was limited to just a pair of baskets the final third of the half as UWP led 32-22 at the halftime break. The Pioneers went on to outscore the Inferno 50-30 in the second half for the final 30-point spread.

The Inferno outrebounded the Pioneers 39-35, while the two teams were even with 24 points apiece in the paint, but UWP scored 34 points off 27 Inferno turnovers proving to be the difference in the contest.

Mollie Mikyska scored a game-high 18 points, Julie Gallegos had 12 and K.D. Jones added a career-high nine points sinking three 3-pointers to lead the Inferno.

Mikyska also snagged nine rebounds for game-high honors, while Gallegos and Jones had four and three assists.

Eilsa Biderback had 12 points to lead the Pioneers, one of four UWP players to reach double-figures.

With a week to regroup, Alverno will return to action at Wisconsin Lutheran College next Saturday. The game marks the fifth of the Inferno's season-opening seven-game road swing, and is a rematch of last season's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship.
