Stevenson Pulls Away From Bridgewater

ASHLAND, Va. - Stevenson University used a late-first half run to take a 10-point lead at the break and the Mustangs pulled away in the second half for a 66-45 victory over Bridgewater College on the opening night of the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Tournament.

The Eagles took a three-point lead, 16-13, with 7:52 left in the first half when Heather Cantrell worked the paint and converted a three-point play.

The Mustangs then hit the Eagles with a 10-0 spurt to take the lead for good. Two free throws by Sara Tarbert and a 3-pointer from Haley Bauer gave Stevenson an 18-16 lead. After a free throw by Tarbert, baskets by Kia Dawkins and Ty Bender pushed the Mustangs lead to 23-18.

Jasmine Pinder hit two foul shots for Bridgewater, but Tarbert and Kayleigh Guzek combined to sink four straight free throws to give Stevenson a 27-18 lead.

Jessica Lam knocked down a jumper for the Eagles before a 3-pointer by Guzek with 30 seconds left in the half sent the Mustangs to the break with a 10-point, 30-20 lead.

Early in the second half, Bridgewater twice cut the lead to eight on layups by Oshene Kelly and Jessi Strom. The Mustangs then reeled off nine straight points to open up a 17-point lead with 16:38 left in the game.

The Eagles would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way as the Mustangs finished off the 66-45 victory.

Bridgewater did well in most statistical categories except taking care of the basketball. The Eagles turned the ball over 34 times compared to just 13 turnovers by Stevenson.

The Eagles converted 41.7 percent of its shots while limiting the Mustangs to 32.9 percent from the floor. Stevenson did put up 25 more shots. Bridgewater won the battle on the glass with 48 rebounds compared to 40 by the Mustangs.

Lam led the Eagles with eight points while Kelly added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds. Tarbert scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to pace the Mustangs. Guzek added 15 points.
