SEWANEE, Tenn. (Nov. 21, 2014) – After getting off to slow starts early this season, the Sewanee women's basketball responded in a big way Friday, as the Tigers used a quick first-half scoring run to push past Welch, 61-42, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The Tigers jumped out to a fast 11-2 lead after Hannah McCormack, Jamie Chauvin, and Kayla Sewell all made Sewanee's first five shots.

From there, the Tigers would stretch their lead to 25, 29-4, with 7:49 left after a three by Sewell.

By the time Welch reached double figures Sewanee was up 25 points.

Sewanee led by that same margin at halftime after making 55.2 percent of its shots. The Tigers also forced 11 Welch first-half turnovers.

In the second half the Lady Flames would play better, outscoring Sewanee 31-25.

Overall, Sewanee finished 26-for-60 (43.3) from the floor. The Tigers also ended with 14 steals and five blocks.

Individually, Chauvin led all scorers with a game-high 14 points. Sewell also finished in double figures with 11 while Haley Lyerly led Sewanee in rebounds with six.

With every player seeing action, Sewanee had 26 bench points. The Tigers also outscored Welch 40-16 in the paint.

Jessica Melvin paced Welch with 10 points.

Sewanee continues its early season with a 1:00 p.m. game against Rust, Sunday.
