St. Norbert Takes Command Early, Downs Yellowjackets

Coming off a heart-breaking loss in their season opener against Carroll on Saturday, the UW-Superior women's basketball team hoped for a better results when they took the court against a talented St. Norbert squad Sunday.

The Green Knights had other ideas however and took command early, jumping out to big halftime lead on the way to posting an impressive 76-46 win in both teams' final games at the St. Norbert College Classic.

The Yellowjackets, who connected on just 32.1 percent of their shots for the game, fell to 0-2 on the season while St. Norbert improved to 2-0 with the victory.

UW-Superior took an early lead in the opening half when Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) and Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) scored in the first 1:02 of action for a 4-0 Yellowjackets edge. Hadley Skalmoski (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) followed up by adding jumper on UW-Superior's next possession, giving the Yellowjackets a 6-2 edge with 18:19 left in the opening stanza.

St. Norbert came right back, taking their first lead of the contest at 16:17 on a free throw by Brianna Byrne before Vanessa Lebens (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) hit two free throws and Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) and Dana Karlstad (Eleva, Wis./Eleva-Strum) each hit jumpers for a 12-7 UW-Superior lead with 12:24 remaining in the first half.

The Green Knights began to take control from there, scoring 17 of the next 23 points to take a 24-18 lead on Regan Carmichael's two free throws at the 5:49 mark.

Skalmoski added her second jumper of the contest on the next possession to cut the St. Norbert lead to 24-20 with 5:36 showing on the clock. But the Green Knights outscored UW-Superior 19-0 over the final 5:15 for a 43-20 bulge at the intermission following Carmichael's three-pointer in the last eight seconds of the opening half.

UW-Superior never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way as St. Norbert connected on 44 percent of their attempts and forced 17 Yellowjacket turnovers for the game.

The Yellowjackets were paced offensively by Linzmeier's 12 points.

St. Norbert had four players score in double-figures led by Julie Kleiman with a game-high 18 points. Carmichael finished with 15 while Tasha Giese and Mallory Nickerson each had 11 for the Green Knights.

The Yellowjackets return to action Tuesday with a road game against UMD on Tuesday. Opening tip against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be heard live with Matt Johnson on the call on 91.3 FM.
