BENNINGTON, Vt. — Southern Vermont College shot 42.9 percent from the field Monday night in a big 90-39 win over Green Mountain College in non-conference women's basketball action at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.

In their home opener, the Mountaineers led 54-22 at halftime and kept up the scoring through the second period to improve their season record to 1-2. GMC starts the year 0-1 with the loss.

SVC freshman Chloe Longe (Enosburg Falls, Vermont) tied the game-high of 20 points, dropping 17 of those in the first half; she added five rebounds and three steals to her night's line. Classmate Sarahi Morillo (Yonkers, New York) followed with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals while junior Javasha White (Schenectady, New York) notched a double-double off the bench with 10 points and a team-best 10 boards.

Junior captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Connecticut) recorded 10 points and a game-high six assists for the Mountaineers, and sophomore captain Amber Dow (Panton, Vermont) chipped in with five points, four rebounds, four assists and a night-best five steals. JuniorKala MacKenzie (Fair Haven, Vermont) scored eight, rebounded seven and blocked four Eagle shots in the win.

Green Mountain was led in points by junior Torie Cowell (Rochester, New York) who tied Longe with 20 while adding 11 rebounds for the double-double. Classmate Allison Wadsworth (Northville, New York) also reached double digits in two categories, scoring 16 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.

GMC took to the scoreboard first with a Cowell basket for the early 2-0 advantage, but that would be the last time the Eagles would lead as Flagg knocked down a three on the other end to spark a 10-0 SVC run. With the score set at 14-5 in favor of the hosts, Southern Vermont opened up the game with a 17-0 stretch that included three baskets from downtown. SVC was able to keep its distance en route to its first victory of the year.

The Mountaineers shot at a 53.7 clip (22-41) in the opening stanza while forcing Green Mountain to commit 22 turnovers; Southern Vermont turned the takeaways into 29 points in the period. SVC went 8-17 from beyond the arc in the first with Morillo knocking down three of those. Wadsworth had 12 of her points before the break.

This marks the second consecutive win for SVC over Green Mountain with the Eagles still holding a 6-4 all-time series lead.

The Mountaineers take the week off before hosting Lyndon State College on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip. Green Mountain takes a break until after Thanksgiving weekend, resuming play December 3 with its 5:30 p.m. home opener against Johnson State College to start the Eagles' North Atlantic Conference schedule.
