Women’s Hoops Wins Frostburg Title

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Gettysburg College women's basketball team claimed the Frostburg State University Jim Crawley Tip-Off Tournament championship for the second consecutive season, downing the host Bobcats 60-49 on Sunday. 

Gettysburg (2-0) was led by seniors Jenna Swope (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Samantha Pagel (Harleysville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) who each poured in 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Junior Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) added 11 points and two blocks on the way to MVP honors. Pagel was also named All-Tournament.

With the score tied at 11-11, the Bullets turned in the next dozen points and finished the half on a 23-5 run. Frostburg managed only one field goal over the final 11:52 as the visitors surged into the break with a 34-16 advantage. 

The lead reached 18 (39-21) on a jumper by Porter at the 16:27 mark of the final period, but the Bobcats came right back with an 11-0 run to slice the lead down to seven (39-32) with 13:35 remaining. A pair of lay-ups by Pagel and a lay-up by freshman Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) pushed the lead back to 13 (45-32) with under 10 minutes left.

The lead dipped to seven (46-39) on a three-pointer by Ronje James at 6:27, but Swope and Pagel combined for the next six points to raise the lead to double-figures for good. 

Gettysburg's defense held Frostburg to just 17-of-66 (25.8 percent) from the field, including just 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from three-point range. The Bullets out-scored the Bobcats 23-18 in the paint and picked up 23 points off the bench. Gettysburg also racked up 19 assists on 21 field goals. 

Swope finished 6-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Pagel missed only one of her six shots and canned 7-of-8 attempts from the charity stripe. Both seniors finished with career highs for points. Porter averaged 16 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 blocks over the tournament to land MVP accolades. Gibbons added six points and 10 rebounds off the bench. 

James was the lone Bobcat to reach double-figures with 19 points. Jasmine Walker posted eight points and 11 boards. 

Gettysburg makes it Centennial Conference debut at home against Ursinus College on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m.
