The Carthage College women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin), ranked No. 20 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today NCAA Division III poll and No. 28 in the "D3hoops.com" pre-season poll, opened its 2014-15 season on Saturday, Nov. 15 with a 70-49 win over Ripon College (0-1) at the Wisconsin-Stevens Point "Pointers Tip-Off Tournament" at the Berg Gymnasium in Stevens Point, Wis. The Lady Reds play the winner of a game between the Pointers and Luther College in Sunday's tournament-championship game at 3 p.m.
The Lady Reds opened up a 13-point lead, 33-20, late in the first half and led by 13, 35-22, at the break. The lead grew to 21 points early in the second half, 49-28, at 15:54 and to 25 points, 64-39, at 5:40. Carthage went on the win by 21 points, 70-49.
Carthage shot 59 percent (27-46), while Ripon shot just 33 percent (16-48). The Lady Reds converted eight-of-18 three-pointers to four-of-13 for the Red Hawks. Carthage was eight-of-15 from the free-throw line, while Ripon connected on 13-of-16. The Lady Reds won the rebounding battle, 37-22, over the Red Hawks.
Four Carthage starters scored in double figures, with Kasey Kleiner leading the way with a game-high 19 points on seven-of-10 field goals, including five-of-eight three-pointers. Alexis Hahn had 15 points on six-of-10 field goals, along with six rebounds. Erin Thomas had 13 points on four-of-nine shooting, while Taylor Boardman added 10 points on five-of-seven from the floor and a game-high 11 rebounds. Emma McDonald led Ripon with 10 points.
